Livraria Lello

A 1906 neo-Gothic bookshop with its famous red staircase, one of the world's most beautiful; entry is deductible against a book purchase.

Why it's worth it (and who it's for)

Livraria Lello is not a museum — it's a bookshop that has been trading as one since it opened in this building on 13 January 1906. What makes it a must in Porto's historic centre is its interior: a blend of neo-Gothic, Modernism and Art Nouveau, complete with its celebrated curved staircase in lacquered red wood, stained-glass windows and a painted lead-glass ceiling in the colours of the Portuguese flag. J.K. Rowling lived in Porto from 1991 to 1993 teaching English and was a regular customer; the atmosphere of the place is cited as one of the visual inspirations for Hogwarts. Worth knowing: no scene from the Harry Potter films was shot here (that was Alnwick Castle and Leavesden Studios, in the UK). The space is small — just two floors — so go in with the right expectations: it's beautiful, but you'll see it quickly.

Tickets, opening hours and how to avoid queues

Online booking is mandatory; tickets are no longer sold at the door. The standard Silver ticket costs €10 and is fully redeemable against any book purchase in the shop, so in practice the entry is free if you take something home. There is also a Gold ticket (around €16) that includes a book from the shop's own collection and grants priority access. There is no general free admission, and no documented discounts for children or seniors. The voucher assigns a 30-minute time slot. Opening hours are 9:00–19:30 every day including Sundays and public holidays (last slots until 19:00); the shop is closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 June (São João) and 25 December. It receives an average of around 3,000 visitors a day, so the first slot (9:00–9:30) on a weekday is your best bet to avoid crowds. Avoid Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00–14:00 and 16:00–18:00, which are peak hours.

How to get there and tips from those who've been

It's at Rua das Carmelitas, 144, right in the Baixa, a 5-minute walk from the Torre dos Clérigos and 10 minutes from Estação de São Bento. By metro, take line D (yellow) to São Bento and walk about 8 minutes up Rua dos Clérigos. The historic tram on line 22 passes very close (stops Cordoaria or Praça de Lisboa) and is the most picturesque option. Several STCP buses (207, 208, 305, 507, 602, 703 and 905) stop 2–5 minutes away on foot. From the airport, take metro line E to Trindade and change to line D to São Bento. Timing: 30–45 minutes is plenty to see the staircase, frescoes, dome and browse the books; if you're a Harry Potter fan or keen photographer, allow 60–90 minutes. Buy only at livrarialello.pt or tickets.livrarialello.pt and be wary of resellers charging extra fees. It's a partly pedestrianised area with no immediate parking, so leave the car behind.
