Best for: first-time visitors, couples and those arriving by train

Inside the walls, with the Temple of Diana, the Cathedral and the Chapel of Bones five minutes on foot. It's the most sought-after area, and it shows: you step out of the hotel and you're already sightseeing, without depending on anything. In exchange, the streets are narrow, almost no accommodation has private parking, and prices rise in high season. This is where you'll find the boutique places with history (Albergaria do Calvário, Solar de Monfalim) as well as the cheapest hostels in the city.

São Mamede

Best for: repeat visitors and those who want neighbourhood life over postcard views

Right next to the old town but a notch quieter: a market, neighbourhood cafés and people who live there year-round. You still walk to everything monumental, and at night you sleep better than on the central streets. The price is practically the same as around the Cathedral, so don't pick it to save money but for the atmosphere. The downside is the same as the centre: parking is a problem and there's less hotel choice.

Zona Universidad

Best for: tight budgets and longer stays

Being a university area, prices drop and the vibe is younger: cafés, terraces and quiet streets off the tourist circuit. It works well if you're on a tight budget or staying several nights, since the per-night difference adds up. You're still within walking distance of the monumental centre, though not right at its door. In exchange you'll have fewer high-end restaurants nearby and a less photogenic setting than around the Cathedral.

Best for: families and travellers with a car

Outside the walls the hotels are bigger, many have a pool and parking is usually easy and free, something you won't find inside the walled centre. The real cost is the 10-20 minute walk to the monumental centre, every time you go in and out.
